The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh was conceived in 1960 as a center of excellence which would endeavour to develop patterns of teaching in postgraduate medical education and produce specialists in several disciplines of medicine. The PGIMER was also given the responsibility to broaden the horizons of medical knowledge by intensive research in the field of health.
The Department of Nuclear Medicine at the PGIMER was created as an independent department in the year 1989. Dr. BR Mittal was the first regular faculty member to join the Department in 1995 and he took over as Head of the Department from February, 2006. First single headed gamma camera was installed in 1989. Presently the Department is equipped with Four state of the art gamma cameras (1-Single Headed SPECT, 3-Dual Headed SPECT/CT systems). Of the three Dual Headed SPECT/CT machines, one is installed in advanced cardiac centre where department provides dedicated nuclear cardiological services. One new CZT camera is being installed in the Nuclear Cardiology.
The PET and Cyclotron Facility at PGIMER, Chandigarh was Inaugurated on August 27, 2009 by Sh. Ghulam Nabi Azad, Hon’ble Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare. Currently department houses
Two PET/CT scanners and an in-house cyclotron. The department also provides a number of radionuclide therapy procedures for different pathological conditions.
